Rent Subsidies

Affordability of housing is creating a greater burden on many people and results in more people, including the working poor, requiring our assistance. Subsidizing someone's rent can make housing affordable and prevent an individual or family from becoming homeless.

A priority of the Lookout Society is to keep people housed in their home communities. However, rents are too high and wait lists to get into subsidized housing are long. As a result, people on low fixed incomes are forced to use our shelters.

Finding affordable housing for them to move to is difficult outside of the Downtown Eastside (DTES), which has the greatest concentration of affordable housing in Canada. Some people find themselves forced to move into the area so they can access the affordable rents.

Lookout tries to prevent people from resorting to living in the DTES, solely for cheap rents. Giving people the chance to remain in their own neighbourhoods benefits those who cannot afford high rents and also reduces competition for affordable and subsidized housing in the DTES.

Donors can help the Lookout Society get affordable housing for people outside the Downtown Eastside by subsidizing the rent of a unit. This brings the cost of rent down to either the shelter portion of assistance, or close to it.

When the individual no longer needs the subsidy, the subsidy can be transferred to another needy person. Rent subsidies works wonders for those who benefit because it gives them autonomy, a normalized environment and support from our Outreach Team. The subsidy can range from $75 per month to $300, depending on the unit found.
