VolunteerMikeRiley-300x452The Lookout Society is an extremely busy organization. In order to provide the best service and reach as many clients as we can, we operate with minimal staffing so we can spend the majority of our budget on vital programs and housing. Consequently, many tasks and jobs are fulfilled only by the grace of volunteer involvement. Volunteers and interns serve an important role at Lookout and we welcome and thank you for your commitment.

To apply as a volunteer please complete the following steps:
1. Download and fill out an Volunteer Application Form to indicate your fields of interest and your availability.
2. Email, fax or mail your application form to Janice Lovick at
fax: 604-255-0790
mail or drop off to: ATTN: Janice Lovick, Lookout Emergency Aid Society, 544 Columbia Street, New Westminster, B.C., V3L 1B1

The Volunteer Coordinator will then match you to available volunteer jobs.

Please note that while immediate placements may be possible, some tasks are seasonal and there may be a waiting period before you are asked to volunteer.

What our volunteers say about their experience

Volunteering is a position of responsibility which helps the Lookout Society meet the needs of clients but also allows volunteers to gain experience and satisfaction. Here are a few of the thoughts Lookout volunteers shared with us after volunteering.

"I just wanted to take the time to send some feedback about the event. It was incredible. I've never volunteered for an event like yours before. And for me, it gave me a whole new perspective. I never once disrespected the homeless, however I did avoid them in fear. I loved meeting everyone at the event, having conversations with people I don't think I otherwise would have met and being able to give free clothes and pillows. Handing out the pillows specifically was the best part of my day. Honestly, your event was life changing for me. I have a new outlook on the homeless, making a difference and a new appreciation for my life. Thank you so much for putting the event together." – J

"A huge thank you to you for setting up our volunteer placement. It's been a couple of weeks and the kids are still talking about what an amazing experience they had. It was the highlight of their week and a lot of them talked about how it completely changed their perspective of the Downtown Eastside. It was great working with you and I really hope we can set up another placement for the camp next year." – Shanila

"Thank you for helping me organise for our group to come and volunteer. The entire group had a great time and I think a large part of that was due to the appreciation shown by your staff and the tenants of the Jim Green Building. They were incredibly friendly and welcoming." – Jessica
