Lookout Society hosted a grand opening celebration on February 10 for our new 40 bed emergency shelter located in the Guildford neighbourhood of Surrey. This low barrier shelter was purchased and renovated in partnership with the City of Surrey and provincial government.
Lookout serves the Lower Mainland with shelters, supportive housing, health programs and more from the North Shore all the way to Abbotsford, and with this shelter opening we now have 381 shelter beds to serve some of the most vulnerable people in the region. Lookout Society’s Chief Executive Officer, Shayne Williams, says, “Surrey has ambitious plans to grow – and increasing support, housing and alternatives for those in need helps ensure a future which will include everyone.”
The shelter is pet friendly, includes onsite storage for valuables, harm reduction supplies and even spaces suitable for couples – because sometimes people will not access services if they are concerned they could be separated. The City of Surrey has stated that 15% of the homeless population in the region lives in Surrey, so we are glad to increase our capacity to serve those in need.
The shelter officially began operations on February 14, 2017.
