Powell Street Getaway to Operate as a Warming Centre this Winter

In partnership with City of Vancouver, Lookout’s Powell Street Getaway (PSG) resource centre will function as a warming centre over these cold winter months on nights where temperatures drop to “feels like -5c”. When opened as a warming centre, the operating hours are 9 pm to 7 am.

Warming centres are a life-saving measure to bring people inside when temperatures drop well below freezing, supplementing the Extreme Weather Response (EWR) shelters that typically operate during periods of extreme weather between November and March. The PSG warming centre will operate on a low barrier model, people can come and go as they please – and can bring their belongings and pets!

While they are not set up with beds or mats, they provide a safe, warm space for people who might be living outside. Warming centre alerts are circulated to partner agencies, community centre staff, outreach program staff, and a variety of agencies serving individuals experiencing homelessness.

When warming centres are activated, their details are also included in the extreme weather response alerts sent out by HSABC.
