Extreme Weather Response Shelters (EWR)

Lookout increases the number of beds during the worst weather of the year to ensure those who are at risk have a safe place to sleep. Extreme Weather Response Shelters (EWRs) are operated by Lookout in Burnaby, North Shore, Surrey and Delta. They are open from October to April during extreme weather nights as called by the City and the EWR response coordinator. Pets are not accommodated unless stated

EWR phone is only answered during activation of EWR and only during the hours of operations.

Burnaby Extreme Weather Response

Burnaby EWR shelters operate from October 15 to April 15 when weather is extreme (temperatures at or below zero Celsius, significant snow accumulation, freezing rain, wind chill that reduces the temperature to feel like zero Celsius, and/or severe wind warning). Local coordinators monitor the weather and need for shelter in the community, and decide when this takes effect. Note that this is a list of Extreme Weather Response shelters in Burnaby that MIGHT be activated this season. Call to ensure that an EWR activation is in effect for a given shelter.

North Shore Extreme Weather Response

The North Shore EWR shelter operates from November 1 to April 15 when weather is extreme (temperatures below -2 Celsius, significant snow, freezing rain, sustained high wind, and/or temperatures near zero with rain). Local coordinators monitor the weather and need for shelter in the community, and decide when this takes effect. Note that this is a list of Extreme Weather Response shelters that MIGHT be activated this season. Call to ensure that an EWR activation is in effect for a given shelter.

North Shore Housing Centre Shelter: 20 mats

Surrey EWR shelters operate from October 15 to April 15 when weather is extreme (feels like temperature is at or below 0 degrees Celsius, significant snow, freezing rain, sustained high wind, and/or temperatures near zero with rain). Local coordinators monitor the weather and need for shelter in the community, and decide when this takes effect.
